"Their findings suggest that yoga does in fact have positive effects on mild depression and sleep problems, and it improves the symptoms of psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and ADHD among patients using medication."

"Some of the studies included in the analysis even suggested that yoga might affect the body in ways similar to antidepressants and psychotherapy. For instance, yoga may influence brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters (boosting levels of feel-good agents like serotonin), lower inflammation, reduce oxidative stress and produce a healthier balance of lipids and growth factors — just as other forms of exercise do."

"The researchers say there’s enough evidence to warrant a larger study on the effects of yoga on mental health, and it should be considered as part of treatment for more disorders."

Blog Post #3

This week I was able to get into more of the background of yoga as well as the basic benefits to practicing yoga.  The online yoga journal has been a great resource so far in my exploration.

Blog Post #2

I have started by simply watching youtube beginner yoga videos and keeping a journal of how I feel before and after.

The biggest thing that I have found so far with simply watching a youtube video by myself is that in order to become fully engaged, and relaxed you must eliminate all distractions.  This is very hard to do in my house.  If I am to do yoga in my bedroom I find the space to be too cluttered, and therefore not a peaceful relaxing place, but rather I find myself cleaning or tidying between poses.  Moving to my houses living room didn't help much either. Instead of clutter as my distraction my roommates became my distraction.

I have learned though that personally for me I stay more focused and become more relaxed when I do yoga before or near bed time.  It may be because my body is already starting to calm down or that I know I need to try and stretch my body before I sleep, but it seems to be progress.  I think yoga would also benefit me to do first thing in the morning too, but I like sleep too much at this point.

From here I have created an event alarm on my phone for a general time that I am usually winding down for bed by that says YOGA! to try to motivate myself to really stay consistent with doing the poses I find important or possibly useful for before bed.  I am also working with one of my roommates to attend a real yoga class with me as I am too afraid to go by myself!

Blog Post 1

Welcome to my first blog post regarding my genius hour topic/question!

This has been a long, hard, thoughtful process for me because I feel as a student we have never really had the time to learn about a lot of things, or ask the questions we want to.  I will also say that this process was difficult for me because I am a very indecisive individual.

As someone who has played hockey competitively since the age of 5 I have never given a lot of other fitness practices a try, including yoga.  So for my genius hour topic/question I have began to consider using yoga for this project.  I can say that I have maybe participated in yoga once or twice in my lifetime as an adult and so would really love to learn yoga, especially as a physical education major.  As someone who struggles with chronic lower back pain, and neck pain; as well as someone who is affected by mental health learning yoga would also be beneficial to me.

I want to know if actively participating in yoga can positively benefit low back pain, neck pain, and mental health disorders.

I am still unsure of how I would go about measuring progress in this scenario, but this is just a start so I am hoping to keep moving forward and gain more information.

Copyright

I believe the first step in teaching students about copyright is simply teaching them what it is in simple terms and why it exists.  I know that in my time at school technology wasn’t used as a tool as much as it is now, but I don’t remember being taught anything about copyright in school.  I think that it is important to start very basic when teaching students about copyright, because I think that our students today don’t think about where the videos they are watching, or songs they are downloading come from.  I think students see the internet as a tool without boundaries in a sense.  They don’t grasp the concept of the creating aspect behind those resources they use and access on the internet.  A lot of people in the community talk about how technologically advanced children and students of today are, and I know that there are some students that are, but I am finding that a majority of them actually aren’t.  Majority of our students today know how to play and access all the video games, and YouTube videos, but that is it.  We need to teach our students what the difference between the different types of copyright are, and how to properly cite the resources they use.  Prior to reading the articles and watching the video provided I wouldn’t have been able to even guess at what the different types of copyright are, and believe that this is the case with a large majority of teacher candidates, and current teachers.  I think that if there were to be a survey of teachers completed on information about copyright that a majority of them wouldn’t know much about it, and therefore our students aren’t learning about it either.  My biggest question is where you would fit it into an already jam packed school year with the curriculum and everything else that goes on during the school year.
