I believe the
first step in teaching students about copyright is simply teaching them what it
is in simple terms and why it exists. I
know that in my time at school technology wasn’t used as a tool as much as it
is now, but I don’t remember being taught anything about copyright in
school. I think that it is important to
start very basic when teaching students about copyright, because I think that
our students today don’t think about where the videos they are watching, or
songs they are downloading come from. I
think students see the internet as a tool without boundaries in a sense. They don’t grasp the concept of the creating
aspect behind those resources they use and access on the internet. A lot of people in the community talk about
how technologically advanced children and students of today are, and I know
that there are some students that are, but I am finding that a majority of them
actually aren’t. Majority of our
students today know how to play and access all the video games, and YouTube
videos, but that is it. We need to teach
our students what the difference between the different types of copyright are,
and how to properly cite the resources they use. Prior to reading the articles and watching
the video provided I wouldn’t have been able to even guess at what the
different types of copyright are, and believe that this is the case with a
large majority of teacher candidates, and current teachers. I think that if there were to be a survey of
teachers completed on information about copyright that a majority of them wouldn’t
know much about it, and therefore our students aren’t learning about it
either. My biggest question is where you
would fit it into an already jam packed school year with the curriculum and
everything else that goes on during the school year.
